Gum Disease

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), almost 65 million adults in America have some form of gum disease. Since most forms of gum disease are painless, most people have no idea that their gums are actively infected with harmful bacteria. This is concerning because diagnosis and treatment of gum disease as early as possible is critical in order to save your smile and preserve the overall health of your entire body!

Gum Disease is the number one cause of tooth loss when left untreated. When caught in the earliest stages, know as gingivitis, the effects are reversible. Once gum disease progresses into more advanced stages, known as periodontitis, bone is permanently lost and extra maintenance is required for life afterward.

TREATMENT OF PERIODONTITIS:

Scaling and root planing (SRPs) are a traditional treatment for active periodontitis. This treatment is essentially a “deep cleaning” of the tooth roots beneath the gum line to remove irritants that cause gum disease in the areas that routine cleanings and at-home dental care cannot reach.

Dr. Mosby’s hygienists are trained to go beyond the traditional scaling and root planing to destroy the disease-causing bacteria using a diode laser. This disinfects the gums, promoting optimal healing.
